Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
