Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
